Noorderhoek Water Clean Sneek

A complete restructuring took place in the Noorderhoek 1 neighbourhood in Sneek. Over a 10-year period, 282 outdated homes were demolished to make way for 232 new homes. This proved an excellent opportunity to apply innovative and sustainable technologies to greatly reduce energy consumption and environmental impact.

A total energy concept was used in this "Waterschoon" project. There is a heating and cooling system that includes electric heat pumps and heat and cold storage in the ground. A high-efficiency peak boiler provides part of the peak heat demand using locally produced biogas. This gas is produced after fermentation of organic material from black water (toilet water), grey water (other water) and household organic waste (fruit and vegetable waste) from the neighbourhood itself.
Thermal energy is also recovered from grey water. The OLAND (Oxygen Limited Autotrophic Nitrification-Denitrification) process is applied as a specific removal technique for nitrogen.
