Integrated sustainability is a key aspect of the new building of the Netherlands Institute for Ecology (NIOO-KNAW) on the campus of Wageningen University.
This is done in the form of various special innovations. For instance, NIOO wants to use a combined heat and power (‘CHP’) system powered by oil obtained from algae to generate energy. The objective is therefore to combine techniques for algae cultivation, digestion and processing of biological waste streams. This is done through decentralised sanitation and the reuse of grey and black water.
This combination should lead to an energetically interesting concept. In the event of positive economic and technical feasibility, an experimental development process is started in order to create an installation that can be used by NIOO.
