Westland

Near The Hague is the new-build location Het Nieuwe Water. This project comprises 1,200 homes where use of decentralised sanitation is desired. Westland is known for its intensive greenhouse horticulture; a sector that leads the way in the use of decentralised water technologies. The sector uses both fresh water and fertilisers that can be extracted from the local water chain. In this combination of greenhouse horticulture and housing, wastewater from the housing is applied to the cultivation in the greenhouse after treatment. The water chain is thereby largely closed: eventually, even drinking water is recovered. The new building location 'Het Nieuwe Water' thus certainly lives up to its name.
