Edmonton, Canada
In late 2016, Canadian property developer Belrose Farms, together with the University of Alberta, launched a demonstration project with the innovative DeSaH wastewater concept. The project developer set up the company Waterwerkx for this purpose.
The objective of this full-scale demonstration project is to demonstrate the relevance, feasibility and economic value of a decentralised wastewater treatment system that will prove suitable for more locations in Canada.
An overall cost saving of 25% compared to conventional wastewater treatment is one of the starting points. It will also produce renewable energy (biogas), recover nutrients and reduce the use of drinking water.
In the newly built neighbourhood (about 1,500 inhabitants) located on the Sturgeon River, near Edmonton, both a blackwater and a greywater treatment system will be used for this purpose. Desah has been involved in the project from the early stages, together with University of Alberta, Waterwerkx and First Step Consultancy. The treatment plant will be operational by the end of 2019.
