NIOO Wageningen

Integral sustainability is central to the new building of the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW) in Wageningen. This takes place in the form of several special innovations.

To generate energy, the NIOO wants to use, for example, a combined heat and power (CHP) plant powered by oil obtained from algae. The objective is thus to combine techniques for algae cultivation, fermentation and processing of biological waste streams. The happens, among other things, through decentralised sanitation and grey and black water reuse. This combination should lead to an energetically interesting concept.

In case of positive economic and technical feasibility, an experimental development route will be initiated to create an installation applicable at the NIOO.
