Buiksloterham, Amsterdam

In Amsterdam's Buiksloterham district, located on the northern IJ bank, 550 homes will be linked to the world's first floating treatment plant. The traditionally industrial business park will be transformed into a sustainable and circular area. The "Circular Buiksloterham" project will be completed by mid-2019.
The houses will be equipped with vacuum toilets that will save on drinking water. In fact, these toilets use only 1 litre of water per flush. The black water from the toilets is then collected via a vacuum sewer and transported to a fermentation tank. Here, pollutants are removed from the medium and biogas is produced through fermentation. By converting biogas to electricity, the plant has become completely energy-neutral.Furthermore, nutrients are recovered from the black water, such as phosphate that can be reused as fertiliser.
