Circular housing estate in Westland
In Westland, on the outskirts of The Hague, new construction location ‘Het Nieuwe Water’ is taking shape: a progressive project with over 1,200 homes. What makes this project unique is the link between the houses and the surrounding greenhouse horticulture. Here, waste water is not seen as a residual flow, but as a valuable source for reuse.
The houses will be equipped with a decentralised sanitation system, where grey and black wastewater are collected and treated separately. After treatment, the treated water - along with recovered fertilisers - will be used in cultivation within the greenhouses.
The result is a virtually closed water cycle in which domestic wastewater serves again as a raw material. Ultimately, even drinking water is recovered from the system. In doing so, this project makes a concrete contribution to circular area development and innovative water reuse.

What we delivered
Desah helped prepare a grant proposal to obtain financial support for the innovative approach. We also carried out a thorough feasibility study that brought together technology, logistics and spatial integration. We also provided substantive support for the social cost-benefit analysis (SCBA), which revealed the added value of this circular approach.
Why this solution?
- Circular environment
- Wastewater treatment at district level
- Scalable and modular concept
- Sustainable and cost-effective
