Sustainable research building
The Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW) in Wageningen is known as one of the most sustainable research buildings in the Netherlands. From the outset, one goal was central: to create a fully sustainable building in which the sanitation system also contributes to energy and resource recovery objectives.
In this project, Desah provided a decentralised sanitation solution where blackwater and greywater are collected separately and treated locally. This forms the basis for algae cultivation, with the harvested algae serving as feedstock for a combined heat and power (CHP) system. This creates a closed cycle of water, energy and nutrients within the building itself.
This innovative design shows that sustainable building goes beyond insulation and solar panels. The wastewater system can also serve as a source of valuable raw materials and renewable energy.

What we delivered
In this progressive project, Desah worked closely with NIOO-KNAW, IngrePro and Wageningen University. Within this collaboration, Desah made an essential contribution to the process design of the wastewater purification system. Desah also developed the detailed engineering design and supported the project team in preparing a successful grant application. Ultimately, Desah supplied and commissioned the complete installation.
Why this solution?
- Local wastewater reuse
- Energy recovery from wastewater
- Circular and sustainable
- Reduced environmental footprint
