Full-scale demonstration of source-separated wastewater treatment
In 2016, Canadian project developer Belrose Farms, in collaboration with the University of Alberta, initiated a full-scale demonstration project with our innovative wastewater concept. The aim of this project was to demonstrate that a decentralised wastewater treatment system is a technically, economically and environmentally valuable alternative to conventional sewage and treatment methods in Canada.

What we delivered
Within this project, Desah delivered an innovative solution that achieves cost savings of about 25 per cent compared to conventional wastewater treatment. The system is designed to generate renewable energy in the form of biogas and recover valuable nutrients for reuse. The smart design of the system also significantly reduces drinking water consumption within the district.
In the new residential area, which will eventually have a population of about 1,500 and is located on the Sturgeon River near Edmonton, wastewater will be collected and treated completely separately. The black water, from toilets, will be treated in a concentrated manner, creating optimal conditions for biogas production and efficient resource recovery. The grey water, from showers, kitchens and washing machines, among others, is purified via a separate route so that it can be reused on site or discharged safely.
Why this solution?
- Circular and sustainable
- Cost savings
- Reducing drinking water consumption
- Production of biogas
- Nutrient recovery
- Relief of existing infrastructure
