World first with unique demonstration project
In the Lemmerweg Oost neighbourhood in Sneek, Desah realised a unique demonstration project in 2005: the world's first decentralised wastewater treatment system with source-separated sanitation. In 32 rented houses, waste water has since been collected, purified and reused locally and completely disconnected from the conventional sewer system.
This approach shows that decentralised wastewater treatment is not only sustainable, but also practically applicable in residential areas. The installation in Sneek now serves as a showcase for visitors from home and abroad interested in circular water concepts.

What we delivered
The houses are equipped with a system that treats black water (toilet water) and grey water (from shower, washing machine and kitchen) separately. This prevents mixing and enables efficient treatment. Thanks to this separation, grey water remains relatively clean and is easier to reuse.
The black water is vacuum collected and treated locally with innovative technology. This produces impressive results:
In addition, the vacuum system reduces water consumption per toilet flush, making it an essential step in circular water use.
Why this solution?
- up to 50% less CO2 emissions and energy consumption
- Production of biogas
- Raw material recovery
