New building Westland In Westland, on the outskirts of The Hague, new construction location ‘Het Nieuwe Water’ is taking shape: a progressive project with over 1,200 homes. What makes this project unique is the link between the houses and the surrounding greenhouse horticulture. Here, waste water is not seen as a residual flow, but as a valuable source for reuse. The houses will be equipped with a decentralised sanitation system, where grey and black wastewater are collected and treated separately. After treatment, the treated water - together with recovered fertilisers - is used in cultivation within the greenhouses. The result is a virtually closed water cycle in which domestic wastewater serves again as a raw material. Eventually, even drinking water is recovered from the system. In doing so, this project makes a concrete contribution to circular area development and innovative water reuse. Read more Simferopol sports complex In Simferopol, near the Black Sea, Desah collaborated on a future-proof solution for wastewater treatment. An innovative extension was realised within a large sports complex, which, among other things, houses 188 pupils. This expansion doubles the capacity of the boarding school, which calls for a robust and sustainable wastewater treatment plant. Simferopol's location on the Black Sea places additional demands on the environmental impact of wastewater. This water body, due to its limited flow, is extremely susceptible to eutrophication - a process where excess nutrients lead to decline in biodiversity. By focusing on circular and local treatment of wastewater, the impact on this fragile ecosystem is minimised. This separation allows both water streams to be treated more effectively and sustainably, while retaining valuable nutrients and energy. Prior to the project, Desah conducted a feasibility study after which and process and detail design was made. Ultimately, the project was realised on the basis of these preliminary studies. Read more NIOO-KNAW Wageningen The Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO-KNAW) in Wageningen is known as one of the most sustainable research buildings in the Netherlands. From the beginning, one goal was central: to realise an integrally sustainable building, in which the sanitation system also contributes to energy and recycling goals. In this project, Desah provided a decentralised sanitation solution in which black and grey water are collected separately and processed locally. This forms the basis for growing algae, which in turn serve as raw material for a combined heat and power (CHP) plant. This creates a closed cycle of water, energy and nutrients within the building itself. This innovative design shows that sustainable building goes beyond insulation and solar panels. Read more Floriade 2012 Floriade is the world horticultural expo that takes place in the Netherlands only once every ten years. In 2012, this sixth edition took place in Venlo and attracted no less than two million visitors. The central theme was one that is also in Desah's DNA: sustainability. A pioneering concept for circular energy and water flows was realised in the Villa Flora utility building. Separate collection and decentralised treatment of waste water was chosen for Villa Flora. Toilets on the site are connected to a vacuum system that ferments black wastewater together with organic waste. The remaining grey water - such as from sinks - is treated separately with a helophyte filter. This approach minimises water consumption and maximises resource reuse. The project at Floriade serves as inspiration for circular neighbourhood concepts, sustainable offices and recreational areas. Read more Noorderhoek, Sneek A complete redevelopment took place in the Noorderhoek residential area in Sneek: 282 outdated houses made way for 232 new, future-proof homes. This large-scale restructuring project provided a unique opportunity to use circular technologies for sustainable water management. An integrated energy and water concept was chosen within the ‘Waterschoon’ project. In cooperation with various parties, Desah delivered an innovative decentralised sanitation system that treats black and grey water separately. This made Noorderhoek the first residential area worldwide where this separation and treatment was successfully applied at neighbourhood level. The installation in Sneek now serves as a showcase for visitors from home and abroad interested in circular water concepts. The plant includes a digester for black water and food waste, which generates biogas. At the same time, nitrogen is efficiently removed from black water, and valuable struvite is recovered; a fertiliser that can be reused in agriculture. Grey water is also treated in the district. Energy is saved via heat recovery from greywater, while biological treatment ensures concentrated treatment to high-quality effluent. The entire system is equipped with an advanced control and automation system, ensuring stable operation and easy management. Desah was responsible for the complete start-up of the system, and also provides management and maintenance, ensuring that the installation continues to operate sustainably and efficiently. Desah supplied the system for treating the black and grey wastewater. The black water from the vacuum toilets, together with organic waste, is collected in a concentrated form and fermented in a special fermentation tank. This fermentation process produces biogas, which is used to heat the building. This significantly reduces dependence on fossil energy sources. The water from the urinals is separated from the black water and processed in a struvite reactor, where phosphate is recovered in the form of struvite, a high-quality fertiliser that is directly applicable in agriculture. In doing so, the concept contributes to the circular nutrient chain. The use of waterless urinals and vacuum toilets saves a considerable amount of drinking water.
