The new development project “Het Nieuwe Water” (New Water) is located near the city of The Hague. This project comprises 1,200 houses that require the use of decentralised sanitation. Westland is known for its intensive greenhouse horticulture; a sector that is at the forefront of the use of decentralised water techniques.
The sector uses both fresh water and fertilisers that can be extracted from the local water chain. This combination of greenhouse horticulture and houses uses the wastewater from the houses after processing for cultivation in the greenhouse. The water chain is thereby closed to a large extent: Eventually, even drinking water is recovered. The development ‘Het Nieuwe Water’ certainly lives up to its name.
